This Ol’ House

Bakewell Old House Museum

This commissioned piece shows the front elevation of Bakewell Old House Museum. A long building, added to over the years, it sits in a narrow lane above Bakewell Church. This view of the front can only be seen with artistic lincence as a “stitched panorama”

The original Tudor section (on the left) was built as a tax collector’s cottage in the reign of Henry VIII then made much bigger and converted into a gentleman’s residence during the reign of Elizabeth I.
In 1777 Richard divided the Old House into five cottages for mill workers (note the “Arkwight Windows” in the central section) and in the 1950s the house was saved from demolition by the Bakewell & District Historical Society who converted it to a museum.

This framed original embroidery is sold.
Giclee prints taken from the original artwork are available
